Cross the causeway to Holy Island, discover this magical place. Lindisfarne Castle was converted by famed architect Sir Edwin Lutyens into a private holiday home for Edward Hudson, founder of Country Life magazine. Check the crossing times before you travel.

If you recall an advert for a bank with wide white sand beaches with black horses galloping in the waves you’ve already got a sense of the landscape, only its better in real life. The castle isn’t too shabby either.

You need to walk to the castle from Craster on the coastal path to get the full ruddy faced feeling.

You might combine a day in Warkworth with a trip to Amble, but it is time well spent on its own too. The castle, and a walk by the river, will not be time wasted in Northumberland.

If you are on the way up to Scotland… Another grand Georgian house with architectural features to drool over, incredible gardens to admire and play in, and the inevitable tea room.
